Sam Askey-Doran
The fastest swimmer in Kona history
Sam Askey-Doran is a 22-year-old triathlete from Hobart, Tasmania, and one of the most exciting swim talents in long-course racing. Before triathlon, he spent more than a decade as a distance swimmer — racing everything from the 400m to the 1500m in the pool and the 10km open water at national championships — and he remains a dominant force on Tasmania's ocean-swim circuit, with a long list of race wins.
Inspired to take on Ironman in 2023 by fellow Tasmanian and pro Cam Wurf, Sam made an immediate impact. In 2024 he won his age group at Ironman Cairns to earn a coveted slot at the Ironman World Championship in Kona — where he promptly rewrote history, recording a 45:43 swim split to set the fastest swim in the race's storied history, then backing it up with a 9:26:29 finish.
In 2025 he claimed the amateur title at Ironman Cairns with the fastest swim of the day, coming home 22nd overall and riding his way into the professional field with a time of 8:45:38. This earned him a berth on the Ironman World Championship stage in Nice, France. With elite swim speed, a fast-developing bike and run, and years of racing pedigree still ahead of him, Sam is only getting started.
